How to generate a plantuml diagram

Tips on editing a PlantUML Diagram using Eraser

• Try multiple diagram types. Eraser offers multiple diagram types including architecture, sequence, flowchart, and entity relationship. Try different types to see which one your PlantUML code would best be represented as.
• Try different editing methods (requires signing in to Eraser). Eraser offers three different ways to edit a diagram. You can edit using AI prompts, directly editing the Eraser syntax, and click-dragging elements using Eraser’s visual editor.
• Try collaborative editing (requires signing in to Eraser). Once signed in, you can simply share the link to a file or diagram with a collaborator to work together on a diagram in real-time.
• After making edits, if you need Eraser code to be translated back to PlantUML code, you can use any generic LLM (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) to convert it.

Steps to generate a diagram

1. Paste your PlantUML code into the prompt field
   Your PlantUML syntax could come from any source including any generative LLMs like ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Cursor, or any repositories of Mermaid-based documentation.

2. Click generate
   Your PlantUML code should be converted into an Eraser diagram in a few seconds.

3. Edit the diagram using AI prompts
   (requires signing in to Eraser). For example: "Group all data components into a ‘Data Layer’" or "Add an API Gateway in front of the backend services."

4. Tweak the layout using GUI controls
   (requires signing in to Eraser). Adjust spacing, reroute lines, or rename components for clarity.

• Can I edit the generated plantuml diagram?
  Yes. Click “Save and Edit Diagram” to open it in Eraser, where you can edit using diagram-as-code syntax or the visual GUI.

• What can I use as a prompt?
  Plain English, a nested list, or a code snippet. You can also paste excerpts from requirements docs, transcripts, or knowledge-base articles.

• Can I use this from an AI agent?
  Yes. Eraser runs an MCP server, so any MCP-compatible client – Claude, Cursor, or ChatGPT – can create and edit these diagrams directly.
